The Mission
We’re building a permanent creative home in Saskatoon – and we need your help to make it real.
We’re saving everything we earn to purchase our own building to transform into a community hub for classes, shows, workshops, productions and so much more! We want to create a modern iteration of the creative hubs we have been so lucky to be involved with throughout our lives.
The Dream.
Blackbox Academy lived as an inspired idea in my head for over 15 years before finally finding its way into action with the help of my partner, Kristin. As a young actor I would fantasize about the idea of having a community school and space where my friends and I could get together and share our love for the craft of performance. There was nothing quite like the experience of connecting with a group of peers in the safety of a creative space. I experienced this numerous times throughout my acting training and fell in love with the experience. It was a sense that I could actually be myself and could let loose and be fully present with my classmates in a way that otherwise seemed impossible.

Why Our Mission Matters
I began to understand the value of a space like this only when I took a hiatus from acting and joined the ‘real world’. I very quickly recognized the incredible importance of these performance spaces. In performance education, students are given the chance to explore and expand who they are. They get to try on characters, release stuck emotions, explore strengths and weaknesses, deeply connect with fellow students, and study what makes us human.
The Plan.
Our Commitment to Make it Happen!
Kristin and I are full-time volunteers for Blackbox Academy. We don’t earn a penny. We have separate jobs that allow us to support ourselves financially while growing this community to its fullest potential.
That means almost anything you do with us supports the mission!
If you take a class, buy some merchandise, donate, tell a friend, buy a gift card, interact with us on socials, share a video, come to a performance, or any other interaction with Blackbox Academy, you are in direct support of our dream.
So thank you for being here! Your support means the world to us.

Why Else Does Our Mission Matter?
In a world that often pushes us to disconnect from ourselves and each other, we create a space where we can rediscover our voices, our presence, and our ability to communicate authentically. Through acting, movement, improv, and voice work, we don’t just train performers – we help people unlock the skills to navigate life with confidence, creativity, and empathy.
What happens inside our classrooms extends far beyond the screen and stage.
Our work fosters resilience, emotional intelligence, and the courage to step into discomfort – qualities that ripple out into communities, workplaces, and relationships. We know that when people grow as performers and storytellers, they grow as leaders, collaborators, and change makers.
That’s why our mission matters: because by empowering individuals to transform themselves, we ultimately help shape a more expressive, compassionate, and connected world.

Why Owning a Space Is Important
Owning a building has a phenomenal amount of benefits for the business and our community.
On a local level, it establishes permanence and a commitment to Saskatoon. It sets a home base for us and allows us to begin to build trust in a more significant way.
It creates a real sense of home and community for the students.
Having access to a space 24/7 allows us to operate a lot more classes and begin to expand the community and our offerings.
Owning also protects us against the uncertainty of renting, which is especially important as our business requires consistent, uninterrupted space to operate. The less we have to maneuver around the demands of other ownership, the better we can serve our community.
Without owning a stable space, we are limited in our ability to grow a thriving community.
